George Carlin, the ground-breaking comedian whose career spanned more than five decades, died on Sunday at St. John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, California. Carlin had complained of chest pain earlier in the day and passed away at the hospital. He was 71.
Carlin created 23 comedy albums, was the star of 14 HBO specials and appeared numerous times on late-night talk shows, wrote three books, appeared in several movies and toured extensively across the United States.
He collected four Grammy Awards for spoken comedy and was nominated for five Emmy Awards over his career.
The controversial comedian grabbed headlines in 1972 when he uttered his famous “Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television.” After performing the routine in a Milwaukee club he was arrested and charged with disturbing the peace, the charges were later dropped.
Those seven words eventually led to a Supreme Court ruling which ruled the government could sanction radio stations for airing offensive language during hours which children may be listening.
