MDC Party Headquarters Raided by Zimbabwe Police, More than 60 Arrested

One day after Movement for Democratic Change leader Morgan Tsvangirai pulled out of the upcoming presidential run-off in Zimbabwe his party’s headquarters in Harare was raided by police and more than 60 were arrested.

Tsvangirai dropped his bid for the presidential office on Sunday after determining the growing violence against his supporters was too high a cost for the campaign to continue. The leader has accused current president Robert Mugabe of implementing state-sponsored violence against the MDC and said a free and fair election in Zimbabwe was impossible.

Tsvangirai and Mugabe were set to face off in the June 27 run-off but the violence leading up to that date has left at least 70 dead and thousands displaced, many of those affected were supporters of the MDC.

Mugabe has said the MDC was responsible for the violence and called Tsvangirai’s decision to step out of the race a move to avoid an embarrassing loss.
