George Carlin, Counterculture Comedian, Dies at 71

Stand-up comic and author George Carlin, who was best known for his routine “Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television,” has died of heart failure at the age of 71. Carlin passed away at Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, California on Sunday.

Carlin had a history of heart trouble. He previously suffered a heart attack.

Carlin’s “Seven Words” routine in 1978 sparked controversy and court battles. In the routine the counterculture icon made explicit comments on sex and drugs. The lawsuit was taken all the way to the Supreme Court and it was ruled indecent.

Carlin refused to stop performing “Seven Words” and was arrested several times. He wrote the bestselling book ‘Brain Droppings’ and last November he was set to receive the John F. Kennedy Center’s Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.

He is survived by his wife Sally Wade and daughter Kelly Carlin McCall.
