Four police officers in London have been charged with
assault for allegedly beating a terror suspect. The Crown Prosecution Service claims
Babar Ahmad suffered “a number of injures, including heavy bruising to the
head, neck, wrists and feet” at the hands of Police Constables Rod James Brown,
Nigel Cowley, Mark Jones and Detective Constable John Donohue when he was
arrested at his Tooting, south London home in 2003.
Ahmad was released without charge. Last year he was awarded
$93,500 compensation in a civil case at Britain’s High Court.
The CPS originally refused to bring charges against the
officers. In a statement this week, Ahmad said he is “pleased that the CPS has
decided that a jury will hear the evidence in this case.”
All four of the Metropolitan Police officers must appear
in court on September 22.
Ahmad is currently being held in Long Lartin prison for a
2004 arrest on a U.S. extradition request. He is accused of running a website
that raised funds for Islamist militant groups.
