Jessica Bruinsma Rescued in Alps After Using Sports Bra for Signal

A 24-year-old American hiker was rescued from the Bavarian Alps after being stranded for nearly three days. Berchtesgaden police officer Lorenz Rasp said Jessica Bruinsma was rescued after she attracted the attention of lumberjacks by attaching her sports bra to a cable used to move lumber down the mountains.

“She’s a very smart girl, and she acted very resourcefully. She kept her shirt and jacket for warmth, but thought the sports bra could work as a signal,” said Rasp.

Bruinsma was hiking with a friend near the Austrian border on June 16 when she lost her way in bad weather. She fell nearly 17 feet to a overhang where she spent the next 70 hours. Bruinsma attached her bra to the cable, which was only a few feet away, and a worker found it when the cable car began moving up the mountain.

The worker heard of a missing woman in the Alps and contacted police. Officers followed the line up the mountain in a helicopter and rescued Bruinsma. She suffered a bruised leg and dislocated shoulder.
