Narconon Urges Participation

The International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking

"Illicit drugs destroy innumerable individual lives and undermine our societies. Confronting the illicit trade in drugs and its effects remains a major challenge for the international community."  Kofi Annan UN Secretary-General

In observing "The International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking", set by the United Nations as June 26, Narconon Drug Rehabs have gotten information to thousands through radio and press interviews.

Mr. Gordon Weinand, spokesperson for Narconon Drug Rehab in Georgia, states "I have given radio interviews relating my experiences with drug addiction and drug rehab. Being one of the original graduates of the Narconon Program over 40 years ago, I have a unique perspective on how bad drug abuse is and how bad it is getting. If all of us don't work together to fight illegal drug abuse, it will only get worse."

Featured on several TV shows, radio talk shows, and newspaper articles, Mr. Weinand is in charge of Public Relations. "Education is the key. If our children are not made aware of the dangers of drug abuse in terms they can understand, we face an uphill battle. Drug rehab is effective, but I would rather not have someone start drugs than to have to rehabilitate them."

Recent studies in England have indicated that a single drug addict not only destroys his or her own life, but affects all those around. "The cost to society, in terms of crime, healthcare, and other considerations, are over one million dollars over the lifetime of an addict," states Mr. Weinand. " However, studies have shown that if someone recieves treatment before the age of 21 the costs to society go down to an average of $137,000 per addict."

When added to the contribution to the intangible costs associated with drug addiction, drug education is something that needs top priority. One parent commented, "To a parent that has lost a child to a drug overdose there is no way to gauge the true 'cost'. Wounded beyond healing we are at wit's end."
