Robert Mugabe Determined to Hold Presidential Elections on Friday

Despite heavy criticism from the international community Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe has no plans on halting the run-off elections scheduled for Friday, June 27.

Mugabe’s opponent, Movement for Democratic Change leader Morgan Tsvangirai, has dropped out of the election after declaring there was no way the process would be fair and free. Tsvangirai has said he could not, in good faith, ask his supporters to cast a vote on Friday knowing it could cost them their life.

The opposition leader has accused Mugabe of using government officers and members of his ZANU-PF supporters to embark on violent attacks against MDC backers. There have been various reports that have put the death toll at more than 80 people with hundreds of thousands more sent fleeing due to intimidation.

Mugabe has denied any involvement in the violence and has countered the claims by stating the MDC had been the source of the violence and Tsvangirai’s reason for dropping out of the election was because he wanted to avoid a humiliating loss.

On Tuesday Mugabe addressed a rally in Banket telling the crowd he had no plans to fold to international pressure to halt the elections. Mugabe told supporters, “They can shout as loud as they like from Washington or from London or from any other quarter. Our people, our people, only our people will decide and nobody else."
