26 Members of MS-13 Arrested in Racketeering, Trafficking Ring

26 members of the notorious gang MS-13 were arrested on Wednesday for charges in the United States and El Salvador.

The members of MS-13, also known as La Mara Salvatrucha, were charged with federal racketeering and other crimes by a federal grand jury in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The 55-count indictment alleges that since the members operated as a gang; committed four murders; trafficked cocaine and marijuana; and committed multiple robberies and assaults, among other crimes

The charges stem from an investigation initiated by the FBI "Safe Streets" Gang Task Force in North Carolina. The suspects were charged under the federal Racketeer Influenced Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act, a law used to target organized crime groups.

The MS-13 gang is one of the largest gangs in the nation with 10,000 members in the U.S., Mexico, El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala. The gang was formed in Los Angeles, but has spread throughout the United States to at least 38 states. Most MS-13 members are immigrants from El Salvador or children of Salvadoran immigrants.

The gang's activity has caused the U.S. to expand its anti-gang efforts into Central America. Last year, the FBI and El Salvador's National Civilian Union combined to create the Transnational Anti-Gang center.
