Monet’s ‘Water Lily Pond’ Sells for Record $80 Million

A painting by French impressionist Claude Monet sold for more than $80 million Tuesday at a Christie’s auction in London.

“Le basin aux nympheas” or “Water Lily Pond” had been in a private collection since it was purchased at a New York auction in 1971.

Tuesday’s purchase price broke an auction record for a Monet work, which was set in May when “Le Pont de chemin de fer a Argenteuil” sold for $41.4 million.

“Water Lily Pond” was part of a four-work collection of paintings signed and dated by Monet in 1919.
