2008 BET Awards Offer Several Surprises, Great Performances

The 2008 BET Awards took place Tuesday night with several blockbuster performances. The award show was broadcasted live from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.

Alicia Keys had arguably the greatest performance of the night and one of the best in the history of the BET Awards. Keys performed her hit song "Teenage Love Affair", but then surprised the crowd with performances with SWV, En Vogue and TLC.

The reunions of SWV, En Vogue and TLC were the first for the respective groups in years. It was one of the few times that all three groups have performed on stage together.

T. Pain, who was nominated four times for the Best Collaboration award, performed with all four of the people he shared the nominations with. Flo Rida came on stage to sing his hit song "Low" with T-Pain, then Rick Ross came out to perform "The Boss". T-Pain was then joined by DJ Khaled to perform the "I'm So Hood (Remix)" with OutKast's Big Boi and Ludacris.

Later in the show, T. Pain stepped on the stage with Lil Wayne, who ended the show with his No. 1 hit "Lollipop" and "A Milli" off of his platinum-album "Tha Carter III".

Ne-Yo had a great performance with his new song "Closer", while Chris Brown brought out Ciara in an amazing dance routine for his song "Take You Down". As Ciara danced closely to Brown, the cameras shot back to Rihanna, Brown's rumored girlfriend and with whom Brown sat next to during the show.

In other performances, Nelly performed shirtless along side Jermaine Dupri and Fergie; Usher sang his hit song "Love In The Club" with dazzling dance moves and lighting; Young Jeezy was joined by Kanye West for his new hit "Put On"; Rihanna performed "Take A Bow"; Keyshia Cole performed "Heaven Sent" and was joined by Lil Kim on "Let It Go"; and Marvin Sapp swooned the crowd with his gospel sounds.

The highlight of the night was when soul legend Rev. Al Green was given the Lifetime Achievement Award. After tributes by John Legend and Jill Scott, Maxwell surprised the crowd, singing "Simply Beautiful". Green then got on stage to sing his hit song "Let's Stay Together" and "Love & Happiness".

Queen Latifah introduced Humanitarian Award recipient Quincy Jones, calling him "an international artist" and "a leader."

The night hit a couple of somber moments when UGK won Best Video and Best Group, shortly after the death of the duo's Pimp C. Fellow member Bun B accepted the award for his "brother" and thanked the crowd for their support over the years.

Kobe Bryant and Missy Elliott were two early winners, neither of which were present to accept their awards. The-Dream was another winner who was not present.
