Tsvangirai called for armed international peacekeepers to ensure an electoral process that was free and fair. South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu supported that call, saying intervention was necessary.
Reports have surfaced in recent days of extreme violence against opposition supporters, and Tsvangirai indicated he withdrew from the presidential race for fears of the safety of those backing the Movement for Democratic Change. Tsvangirai fled to the embassy Sunday citing fears for his own security.
In his formal withdrawal from the presidential election, Tsvangirai stated, “The violence, intimidation, death, destruction of property is just too much for anyone to dream of a free and fair election, let alone expect our people to be able to freely and independently express … themselves.”
