Canada Reports New Case of ‘Mad Cow’ Disease

Canada confirmed the discovery of a new case of mad cow disease Monday, the 13th case reported overall since 2003 and the third to be discovered in British Colombia.

According to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, the latest case of mad cow disease does not pose a threat to public health. Officials said no part of the infected animal entered the human food system.

Mad cow disease, also known as bovine spongiform encephalopathy, causes spongy holes in the brain. In humans, a rare but fatal form of the disease called variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob syndrome has been linked to eating meat from infected cows.

More than 220,000 Canadian cattle have been tested for mad cow disease since the first case was reported in 2003.
