‘Satanic Verses’ Author Salman Rushdie Knighted

Queen Elizabeth II conferred a knighthood on British novelist Salman Rushdie Wednesday.

The ceremony came a year after the announcement that ‘The Satanic Verses’ author would receive the title for services rendered to society.

Rushdie drew heated protests from the Muslim world after ‘The Satanic Verses’ was published in 1988 as many considered it blasphemous.

In 1989, Iranian leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini issued a death sentence for Rushdie, forcing the author to accept round-the-clock protection.

The Iranian government withdrew the death sentence in 1998, allowing Rushdie to gradually return to public life.
