Namibia’s Plan to Kill 86,000 Seals Draws Outrage from Animal Rights Activists

Seal hunters in Namibia will be allowed to kill 86,000 seals during the annual seal hunt which runs July 1 to Nov. 15. Animal rights activists expressed outrage over the inhumane treatment, and claim the seal population off the country’s Skeleton Coast is at risk.

Government authorities stated Namibia’s seal population is sustainable and not at risk of extinction, and that the seal hunts protect the country’s fishing industry. The seals consume some 900,000 tons of fish each year. The annual seal hunts also create additional jobs, and provide revenue from skins, fur and meat according to officials.

Animal rights activists point out the seal is listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and says the clubbing methods used by the Namibia seal hunters are inhumane.
