Economy Rebound in the Second Half?
With only days left in the first half, predictions for second half economic growth are being sought of economists. Statements such as, “It’s too early to tell,” or “There may be evidence of a turn around,” are useless chatter. These statements don’t help us. But I suspect economists have learned to be ambiguous knowing that their words can be used against them.
On October 17 1929, one of the best known economists at that time, Irving Fisher, Ph.D. said, “Stock prices have reached what looks like a permanently high plateau.”
The Harvard Economic Society (HES) November 2, 1929, wrote, "... despite its severity, we believe that the slump in stock prices will prove an intermediate movement and not the precursor of a business depression..."
