US Supreme Court Overturns DC Handgun Ban

The United States Supreme Court overturned a 32-year ban on handgun ownership in DC on Thursday, stating residents had a constitutional right to possess guns for personal use.

In what is seen as clear interpretation of the Second Amendment the Supreme Court, in a 5-4 ruling, stated the right to bear arms was not restricted to “a well regulated militia” but was to include “the right of the people to keep and bear arms.”

The ban had been in place since 1976 but the ruling was challenged by a security guard who argued that if he was allowed to carry a gun at work he should be allowed to own a gun in his own home. Dick Heller’s argument was upheld in a lower court and on Thursday the Supreme Court upheld that decision.
