US Lifts North Korea Sanctions

President George Bush announced Thursday that economic sanctions against North Korea will be lifted, and the country once a charter member of the “axis of evil” will be removed from the U.S. terrorism black list.

The move signified that North Korea had met a key requirement of its promise to abandon its nuclear weapons program, having turned over an accounting of its nuclear work to China.

Bush acknowledged there was much more to be done to repair North Korea’s relationship with the international community, but added he was pleased with this first step.

“I’m pleased with the progress. I’m under no illusions. This is the first step. This isn’t the end of the process. It is the beginning of the process … If North Korea continues to  make the right choices it can repair its relationship with the international community … If North Koreas makes the wrong choices, the United States and its partners in the six-party talks will act accordingly,” Bush said.

The talks, which include North Korea, China, Japan, Russia, South Korea and the United States, began in 2003.

Other sanctions against North Korea will remain, leaving it one of the most heavily sanctioned nations in the world.
