The country’s agriculture secretary said ethanol production is putting a financial strain on cattle and poultry farmers, and causing world food prices to skyrocket.
In a speech to cattle farmers Wednesday, Agriculture Secretary Alberto Cardenas indicated the Mexican government had allocated more than $8 million to help 500,000 ranchers.
Last week, Mexican President Felipe Calderon announced a freeze on prices of more than 150 food products, including beans, canned tuna, coffee, and canned tomatoes. Prices on those items will remain fixed until Dec. 31 in an effort to help families cope with rising food prices.
