Protesting French Winemakers Torch Police Cars, Vandalize Courthouse

Winemakers in southern France demonstrated Wednesday to protest plummeting wine prices and soaring fuel costs.

The protests grew violent as the mob of thousands burned two police cars in Montagnac and broke courthouse windows in the city of Montpellier.

Four bank buildings were damaged and supermarkets were vandalized during the rioting as vintners demanded government aid to help offset the plummeting prices for their regional wines.
