Olympic Committee Reprimands China for Political Remarks Made during Torch Ceremony

The International Olympic Committee issued a rare rebuke to Beijing organizers over political comments made during the closing ceremony of the torch relay in Tibet.

“We have written to BOCOG to remind them of the need to separate sport and politics and to ask for their support in making sure that such situations do not arise again,” a statement issued by the IOC read.

A spokesman for the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games (BOCOG) declined to comment.

In a speech Saturday for the Olympic torch, Tibet’s Communist Party boss Zhang Qinglin praised China’s policies on Tibet and supported Beijing’s handling of the Dalai Lama, Tibet’s spiritual leader. “The red five-star flag will always fly above this land,” he said.
