US Beef to Hit South Korea Markets Next Week

The South Korean government officially lifted its ban on US beef Thursday, paving the way for thousands of tons of American beef to make its way into local markets next week.

More than 5,000 tons of beef have been held in South Korean warehouses since October, when the partial easing of a 2003 ban was scrapped due to public protests

Protestors have threatened for weeks to boycott American beef imports amid concerns over a single U.S. case of mad cow disease.

After spending months in negotiations, South Korea agreed in April to resume American beef imports. Public demonstrations forced government officials to seek revised terms to the deal.

The US agreed last week to restrict American beef exports to cattle younger than 30 months, a move that will lower the risk of mad cow disease.
