California Wildfires Threaten Big Sur

Northern California wildfires continue to devastate the landscape and the community of Big Sur could be the next victim as a blaze barely 3 percent contained now threatens to burn through neatly 500 homes in the area.

California has been inundated by more than 800 fires sparked by lightning strikes, the largest now raging just 20 miles east of the fire that threatens Big Sur. That fire was started more than two weeks ago by a campfire.

The Big Sur wildfire originated in the Los Padres National Forest and burned 16 homes before inching along the coast and now sits about a mile south of the scenic Big Sur.

The National Guard has been called in by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to help battle the blazes and help from neighboring states Oregon and Nevada have also arrived to assist firefighters.
