The European Union has called Friday’s presidential election in Zimbabwe a “sham” after current president Robert Mugabe opted to continue with process despite international outcry over the tactics being used by the government’s military and supporters of Mugabe’s ruling Zanu-PF.
While two names appear on the ballot only Mugabe remains in the race as opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai pulled out last Sunday citing fears of violence for himself and his supporters.
Despite calls for a “free and fair election” Mugabe has done little to quell the violence and Tsvangirai’s Movement for Democratic Change party has said nearly 90 supporters had been killed and more than 200,000 have been victims of intimidation.
Tsvangirai won the first round of elections on March 29 but did not accumulate a large enough majority to win the election outright. Since that date Mugabe has stated he would never allow the MDC to takecontrol of the country.
Voting observers witnessed this first hand on Friday as many reported witnessing Zimbabwe’s military forcing people to vote, a vote that would likely be for Mugabe due to the repercussions of voting for Tsvangirai.
Tsvangirai addressed his supporters before the vote stating, “My fellow Zimbabweans, we know what is in your heart. If possible, we ask you not to vote today. But if you must vote for Mr Mugabe because of threats to your life, then do so."
The MDC leader called Friday’s election “another tragic day in our nation's history.”
