Two Congolese Militia Leaders Charged with War Crimes at International Criminal Court

Two Congolese militia leaders have been accused of war crimes related to an attack that allegedly killed 200 villagers, many of whom were burned to death.

Germain Katanga and Mathieu Ngudjolo Chui are facing charges of war crimes as well as crimes against humanity which include murder, sexual slavery, rape and recruiting children as soldiers. Prosecutors leveled the charges at the International Criminal Court in the Hague.

The attacks were related to the Ituri conflict that carried over into the northeastern village of Bogoro and involved Hema and Lendu ethnic groups.

Katnaga led the Patriotic Forces of Resistance of Ituri (FRPI) and Ngudjolo led the Front of Nationalists and Integrationists (FPI).
