North Korea Implodes Nuclear Reactor Cooling Tower

North Korea demolished a nuclear reactor cooling tower Friday in a symbolic declaration to the international community that it will no longer manufacture plutonium for atomic bombs.

It was a visible move that acknowledged progress made at international arms talks. The 60-foot cooling tower was imploded a day after North Korea delivered a declaration of its nuclear programs which included the overall figure of how much plutonium was produced at the facility.

Although the reports have not been released publicly, experts say that North Korea could have produced as much as 110 pounds of weapons-grade plutonium – enough for 10 nuclear bombs.

Representatives from North Korea, China, Japan, South Korea, Russia and the United States have been involved in disarmament negotiations for more than five years. The six-party talks have resulted in a removal of U.S. economic sanctions against North Korea, including removing the country from the State Department terrorism black list.

North Korea remains one the most heavily sanctioned nations in the world.
