Richard "Dickie" Scruggs Sentenced to Five Years in Prison

Richard "Dickie" Scruggs, the famed Mississippi trial lawyer, was sentenced to five years in prison for his role in a judicial-bribery scheme on Friday.

Scruggs will also have to pay a $250,000 fine.

Scruggs plead guilty in March to conspiracy charges related to a federal probe into his handling of a fee dispute with another lawyer.

Scruggs, the brother-in-law of former Sen. Trent Lott (R-Miss.), and co-defendant Sidney Backstrom both pleaded guilty to conspiring to bribe Mississippi judge Henry Lackey.

Scruggs, Backstrom and Scruggs' son Zach were indicted in November on conspiracy and wire fraud in a dispute over $26.5 million in legal fees from a mass settlement of Hurricane Katrina case.

Scruggs, one of Mississippi's richest men, is best known for winning billions of dollars for plaintiffs from tobacco companies in the 1990s.
