Cuba Develops Promising New Cancer Drug

A new drug patented by the Cuban Scientific Research Institute promises to help terminal lung cancer patients live longer.

Known as CimaVax EGF, the drug has helped participants in clinical trials live up to a year longer than expected.

Tested on hundreds of patients over 16 years, CimaVax is classified as a therapeutic vaccine because it does not prevent cancer.

Dr. Gisela Gonzalez, head of the research team that developed the drug, says CimaVax is a breakthrough in treating terminally ill lung cancer patients.

Clinical studies involving CimaVax are ongoing in other countries. The United States has approved testing of the drug, but trials won’t begin for another two years.

Lung cancer claims 1.3 million lives worldwide each year, with the highest rates in the U.S., Canada and Europe.
