Zambian President Rushed to Hospital after Experiencing Sharp Chest Pains

Zambian President Levy Mwanawasa was rushed to an Egyptian hospital on Sunday after experiencing sharp chest pains ahead of an African Union summit that is to be held on Monday.

Mwanawasa has been listed in stable condition at the hospital in Sharm-el-Sheikh, site of the African Union summit.

That summit is expected to focus mainly on the Zimbabwe election, an event that Mwanawasa openly criticized.

Mwanawasa is the current chairman of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and has said Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe has brought embarrassment to the African continent for his actions during the election.

Mugabe ran unopposed in Friday’s election after opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai announced he would drop out of the election last Sunday. Tsvangirai explained that his decision was based on the threat of violence to his supporters from the government’s military as well as it’s supporters.
