Kenya’s Prime Minister Encourages African Union to Suspend Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe

With several leaders of the African Union meeting in the Egyptian resort town of Sharm-el-Sheikh on Monday the focus of conversation quickly turned to Zimbabwe and the actions of its president Robert Mugabe.

Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga has called for the African Union to suspend Mugabe until the 84-year-old allows free and fair elections in the country. Mugabe was sworn in to office on Sunday following Friday’s election in which he ran unopposed after opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai dropped out of the race due to violence.

Odinga blamed Mugabe for the violence, noting the leader used intimidation and the government’s military forces to control the election.

Calls for sanctions against Mugabe have also been made by the United Nations.

Mugabe has held office since 1980, the year Zimbabwe won its independence from Britain.
