Michael Jacques, Uncle of Missing Vermont Girl, Charged with Sexual Assault

The uncle of missing Vermont girl Brooke Bennett has been arrested for sexually assaulting a minor. Authorities say the charges are not related to the disappearance of Bennett.

Michael Jacques, 42, was charged with aggravated sexual assault against a minor. Investigators found evidence of the assault while looking into the disappearance of Bennett, 12.

“The details that led to Jacques’ arrest were uncovered by investigators assigned to investigate the disappearance of Brooke Bennett,” said Vermont State Police in a statement.

Bennett went missing Wednesday after visiting a local convenience store. She had been communicating with someone over MySpace.com, but it is unclear if she voluntarily left with that person or was taken. Police found articles of clothing belonging to Bennett days after she disappeared.

Vermont’s first ever Amber Alert was issued for Bennett.

Jacques is scheduled to appear in court on Monday. He faces up to 10 years in prison.
