The U.S. military will reportedly seek the death penalty against one of the individuals believed responsible for the deadly bombing of the USS Cole in 2000.
Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri is expected to become the first person charged in the United States for the attack that killed 17 U.S. sailors. Two suicide bombers rammed the side of the destroyer while it was refueling in Aden, Yemen on October 12, 2000. The explosion blew a massive hole in the Cole’s port side and left 47 sailors injured
Charges leveled against al-Nashiri include terrorism, murder and attempted murder; he is currently being held by the U.S. military at Guantanamo Bay.
According to Air Force Brig. Gen. Thomas Hartman al-Nashiri aided in planning and organizing the attack. Al-Nashiri admitted to his involvement but later recanted, saying he had been subjected to torture when he made the confession.
