Inmate Frees Both Hostages at Maine State Prison

An inmate at the Maine State Prison in Warren ended a standoff on Monday night after releasing two people he had taken hostage earlier in the day.

Michael Chasse took a prison staff member and a fellow inmate hostage around 2:30 p.m. Authorities have not said what led Chasse to commit the act but the two hostages were released unharmed.

Maine’s Governor John Baldacci commended the prison officers and state police for their actions and expressed gratitude for the manner in which things ended saying, “I'm thankful that the crisis has ended without loss of life.”
