Just days after Zimbabwe’s controversial presidential election that resulted in current President Robert Mugabe remaining in power his Zanu-PF party supporters have lashed out at other countries who criticized the process in which Mugabe was elected.
Mugabe took the election after running unopposed following opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai’s decision to withdraw from the race.
That decision was made after Tsvangirai determined it would be impossible to expect a free and fair election after nearly 90 of his Movement for Democratic Change supporters had been killed and more than 200,000 were forced to flee from their homes.
Mugabe claimed that Tsvangirai withdrew from the race because he wanted to avoid an embarrassing loss yet it had been Tsvangirai who had won the initial vote in March. The results of that vote brought controversy as well as the MDC claimed an outright victory for the presidency yet official numbers declared Tsvangirai had not collected enough votes to avoid a run-off.
The election process in Zimbabwe has resulted in several countries calling for sanctions against Mugabe and his party.
At the African Union summit in the resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt Mugabe’s official spokesman George Charamba criticized the response made by Western countries and said they could “go hang a thousand times.”
Mugabe is expected to speak at the AU summit on Tuesday.
