World Trade Center Rebuilding Timeline and Costs Continue to Pose Problems

It has been more than two years since Freedom Tower was originally scheduled to be completed, taking the place of the Twin Towers and acting as the centerpiece of the World Trade Center rebuilding project following the September 11, 2001 attacks.

That timetable proved unrealistic and the date was quickly pushed back to 2011 but even that has been called unrealistic and the earliest estimates now have 2013 as a possibility.

The entire rebuilding process has been an exercise in futility as rising costs and problems with developers continue to impede progress.

Christopher Ward, executive director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, recognized several issues that had slowed work and caused costs to soar.

The World Trade Center rebuilding project had an initial budget of $14 billion but commodity prices continue to rise causing the budget to grow.
