Australian Law Bans Annoying People during Pope’s Visit; Right to Free Speech Called into Question

An Australian law banning annoying people from Pope Benedict XVI’s July visit was called into question Tuesday as opponents claim the new regulation is vague and subjective, and challenged the penalties as too severe.

The Pope is due to arrive in Sydney, Australia July 12 in preparation for a World Youth Day event that will attract hundreds of thousands of attendees. Supporters of the annoyance law say the regulations are those enforced regularly by police officers in public venues, and that they are not intended to quell dissenters.

The law makes it a crime to annoy or inconvenience people gathering in Sydney for the week-long Catholic evangelical festival. A fine of $5,300 faces those who fail to comply.
