African Union Calls for Power-Sharing Government in Zimbabwe, Neither Side Interested in Proposition

The African Union summit has concluded and leaders who attended the two-day affair in Egypt approved a resolution that would call for a power-sharing government in Zimbabwe following the controversial presidential election that took place in the country last Friday.

Opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai removed himself from the election process nearly a week before the vote after stating a free and fair election would not be possible. Tsvangirai had said supporters of his Movement for Democratic Change had been targeted by President Robert Mugabe’s Zanu-PF party and nearly 90 MDC members had been killed and more than 200,000 forced to flee from their homes.

The election dominated the agenda at the African Union summit as several leaders condemned Mugabe for his actions and threatened sanctions against the country before agreeing on a call for unity. The resolution encouraged the “creation of a government of national unity.”

Neither Tsvangirai nor Mugabe have shown any willingness to work together, both believing their differences were too great to overcome.
