Nigeria Agrees to Summit Talks in Effort to Halt Oil Attacks

Nigerian leaders have agreed to participate in a summit meeting aimed at stopping attacks on the country’s oil installations. A date for the summit has not been set, but government leaders are under pressure to ease the attacks that have caused a 10% reduction in the country’s oil production.

Fuel prices around the world, especially in the United States, have been affected drastically by the attacks, which result in a halt of oil production. One out of every 10 barrels of oil in the U.S. comes from Nigeria.

One of the main armed groups in the area has refused to attend the summit talks until the Nigerian government releases one of its leaders. The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta has used violence against the oil industry in an effort to seek a greater share of profits for the people of the region.

In a recent letter to President Bush, MEND claimed responsibility for two attacks on oil installations, and asked former President Jimmy Carter to mediate its dispute with the Nigerian government.

According to the group’s letter, “The ripple effect of this attack will touch your economy and people one way or the other, and [we] hope we now have your attention.”
