Florida Executes Mark Dean Schwab by Lethal Injection

Mark Dean Schwab was put to death by lethal injection on Tuesday night at Florida’s state prison in Starke.

Schwab had been convicted of kidnapping, raping and killing 11-year-old Junny Rios-Martinez of Cocoa in 1991.

Schwab was the first Florida inmate to be executed since a botched lethal injection made headline in December 2006. In that incident Angel Diaz suffered serious burns and extreme pain after the needles used for the injection were not inserted properly.

Several members of Junny Rios-Martinez’s family applauded outside the prison when Schwab’s death was announced.
