Mongolia Under State of Emergency Following Violent Protests

Mongloia’s President Nambaryn Enkhbayar declared a state of emergency after violent protests erupted following the country’s general election.

 

Shortly after Sunday’s announcement that governing Mongolian People’s Revolutionary Party had taken a majority of the parliamentary seats supporters of the opposition party erupted in violent protests claiming fraud.

 

Protestors began throwing stones at police and the unrest quickly turned to looting as stores and banks reported robberies. Several building were torched including the headquarters of the MPRP and the Cultural Palace.

 

Prime Minister Sanjagiin Bayar accused Democratic Party leader Tsakhia Elbegdorj of “misleading people and inciting violence.”

 

A 10:00 p.m. curfew has been put in place by the government.
