Four Newborns Die in Hospital Fire in Romania

Four newborn babies died Monday after a fire broke out in a Bucharest, Romania hospital. Authorities say the fire began in the intensive care unit at Giulesti Maternity Hospital. An electrical cord in the air conditioning system was not installed properly and caught fire.

No one was in the room at the time the fire started. It burned slowly for nearly an hour before anyone noticed. The hospital staff did not evacuate the babies in the five minutes it took for firefighters to reach the scene. Prosecutors are questioning 15 hospital employees, including a nurse that was supposed to be in the intensive care unit.

Seven babies are being treated for injuries sustained in the fire.
