National Guard Called in to Help Battle California Wildfires

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has order 200 members of the National Guard to assist in battling the wildfires that have ravaged the central and northern portions of the state, the first time such a call has been made since 1977.

Schwarzenegger commended those firefighters who have been working around the clock to battle the blazes yet cautioned the long hours could pose dangerous scenarios as the wildfire season heads into July.

With more than 1,400 wildfires now burning in the state the nearly 19,000 fighting the wildfires have had to be selective in determining what fires to attack. The hot and dry climate that has dominated the California landscape is expected to fuel additional wildfires.

On Tuesday the National Interagency Fire Center warned that the fire activity within California would continue and elevated its national preparedness level to Level 5, its highest mark.
