Zambia President Airlifted to Paris after Suffering Stroke While Attending AU Summit

Zambia’s president was airlifted to a Paris hospital Tuesday evening after suffering a stroke while attending the African Union summit over the weekend.

President Levy Mwanawasa apparently suffered a brain hemorrhage Sunday evening before the start of the AU summit which was being held at a Red Sea resort.

Doctors at an Egyptian hospital reported they were able to stop the hemorrhage, but that Mwanawasa remained in a partial comatose state after suffering a stroke.

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak visited with Mwanawasa at the hospital before he was medically evacuated to Paris for specialist treatment.

According to Zambia’s vice president, Mwanawasa remains in stable condition. No report was given on when he would be able to return to Zambia.
