Alexa Ray Joel Defends Christie Brinkley's Public Divorce Decision

Alexa Ray Joel defended her mother Christie Brinkley for handling her public divorce with Hamptons architect Peter Cook. The divorce trial begins Tuesday.

Joel, 22, feels her mother is correct in making the divorce so public. "She's standing up for herself. I think that is admirable. There's such overwhelming support for her," defends Joel.

Cook is against the public trial, claiming that he wants to shield their two children from the public and the proceedings of their divorce.

Brinkley filed for divorce in 2006 after she found out Cook was having an affair with his 18-year old assistant Diana Bianchi, who claims Cook seduced her shortly after hiring her to work at his architectural firm.

Brinkley and Cook had a prenuptial agreement, but the two have been fighting over custody of their two children and the division of their belongings, including three boats and some real estate. Brinkley's ownership of her $30 million Bridgehampton home is not being contested.

Brinkley had a daughter, Sailor, 9, with Cook. Her 12-year-old son Jack, whom she had with her third husband, Richard Taubman, was adopted by Cook. Her first husband was artist Jean-FranEcois Allaux.

Joel is the daughter of Brinkley and rock legend Billy Joel, her second husband.
