Coney Island Hot Dog Eating Contest July 4: Kobayashi Looking to Reclaim Crown, Joey Chestnut Defends Title

Kobayashi put competitive eating on the map and the stage he used to do it was the world famous Nathan’s Famous hot dog eating contest in Coney Island. The annual event, held on July 4, could have been renamed Kobayashi and some other people after he dominated the table for six years, setting a world-record in 2001.

A strange thing happened in 2007, after looking unbeatable for more nearly a decade Kobayashi, a native of Japan, lost. Not only did Kobayashi’s loss seem un-American it was coupled with his world-record being smashed.

As un-American as it seemed it was an American that reclaimed the Mustard Belt. Joey Chestnut of San Jose, CA inhaled 66 hot dogs and buns in 12 minutes at the Nathan’s Famous to set the new world record.

Now Kobayashi is back and like a great former champ wants to step up to the table and redeem himself. After falling three short of Chestnut last year the man with the iron stomach has said Friday’s noon showdown will serve as redemption.
