American Hostages Touch Down in Texas after More Than Five Years in Captivity

Keith Stansell, Marc Gonsalves and Thomas Howes are back on American soil after spending more than five years in captivity under the arms of the Colombian rebel group FARC.

The three American contractors were among the 15 hostages freed on Wednesday when the Colombian military infiltrated FARC and managed to rescue the hostages in an elaborate ruse.

Early Wednesday morning the hostages were told they were to be transferred to another location and after arriving at a pickup spot they were hurried into two helicopters that they believed would take them to another remote spot.

To their surprise the men on board the helicopter identified themselves as Colombian military who then informed the hostages they had been freed.

Stansell, Gonsalves and Howes arrived in San Antonio, Texas shortly before 12:30 a.m. ET and were hurried to a helicopter to transport them to a military hospital where they would be checked out.

The three men had been held captive since their plane crashed just south of Bogota on Feb. 13, 2003. They had been contracted by Northrop Grumman Corp. who had set up counternarcotics initiatives in Colombia.

A press conference is tentatively set for Thursday at 4:00 p.m. ET.
