US, Poland Reach Missile Deal

The United States and Poland have struck a tentative deal to place a portion of a ballistic missile defense system on Polish territory, drawing strong objections from Russia. The deal requires approval by Poland’s government before it can be implemented.

The agreement would see interceptor rockets, linked to an air-defense radar system in the Czech Republic, right across the border from Russia. The system is intended to defend Europe from a possible attack by the Middle East.

As a condition of its support for the project, Poland’s government is also requesting assistance in rebuilding and modernizing its military.
