Mwanawasa Reportedly Dead in Paris Hospital

Zambia President Levy Mwanawasa died Thursday morning in a Paris hospital, according to news reports. Conflicting statements from Zambian government officials say Mwanawasa is in stable condition after suffering a stroke Sunday.

South African President Thabo Mbeki announced Mwanawasa’s death and called for a moment of silence, while reports of the Zambia president’s death were broadcast on South Africa’s Talk Radio 702.

Zambia Vice President Rupiah Banda issued a statement Thursday, saying “The president had (a) satisfactory night at the Percy military hospital in France. The news reports … are not true.”

Mwanawasa, 59, was preparing for an African Union summit meeting at a Red Sea resort when he apparently suffered a brain hemorrhage. He was airlifted to Paris for specialist treatment.
