South African President Thabo Mbeki mistakenly requested a moment of silence for Zambian President Levy Mwanawasa after receiving word that the leader “had passed away this morning.” Reports of Mwanawasa’s death have been refuted by Zambia’s Vice-President Rupiah Banda.
Mbeki had been told Mwanawasa had died in a French hospital after he suffered a stroke ahead of the African Union summit held in Egypt. He made the announcement while he was attending a ceremony honoring the recent deaths of several immigrants murdered in South Africa.
Reports of Mwanawasa’s death were also carried over South African radio after a man identifying himself as a spokesman from Zambia’s High Commission confirmed the President’s death.
Banda has reported otherwise, saying Mwanawasa had a “satisfactory night” in Paris.
