Former Democratic Republic of Congo Vice President to Face Charges at The Hague

Jean-Pierre Bemba, former vice-president of the Democratic Republic of Congo, has been extradited to The Hague where he will have to answer to charges related to war crimes and crimes against humanity at the International Criminal Court.

Bemba headed the Movement for the Liberation of Congo (MLC) which carried a military arm and in 2002 he was asked by Central African Republic President Ange-Félix Patassé to quell a coup attempt. Bemba’s troops were accused of a series of atrocities related to their actions.

In 2006 Bemba’s presidential bid failed but he refused to disarm his military leading to charges of high treason. Bemba then fled to Belgium last year where he was detained in May.
