Several Hundred Zimbabweans Seek Refuge at U.S. Embassy in Harare

As many as 220 Zimbabweans have gathered outside the U.S. Embassy in Harare hoping to escape the election-related violence that has torn the country apart.

Most of those sitting outside the U.S. Embassy have said they were supporters of opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai and his Movement for Democratic Change party. Because of their allegiance they have been targeted by President Robert Mugabe and his ZANU-PF ruling party and had their homes destroyed.

Tsvangirai exited the presidential race less than a week before the election was to take place citing the growing violence and inability to carry out a free and fair election as his reason. As a result Mugabe ran unopposed and was pronounced the winner of the June 27 run-off.

The results were widely condemned by the international community and several leaders in Africa have criticized Mugabe for the presidential process.
